Between the Rain and the Sun — Tending to What’s Enough

Seasonal Newsletter                                                                                 July 2026
A Note from the Clinic
June moved the way June often does — in fits and starts. A flush of real heat, then back to cool grey skies and wet mornings. The in-between place. It’s a threshold energy, not quite one thing or the other, and the body feels it even when the mind tries to push through. And yet — something is gathering. Calendars filling. Plans being made. That particular hum of summer anticipation before everything actually tips into motion. The gardens are doing their quiet work with little fuss. July is like that. It doesn’t need much. A little tending here and there to stay fresh and nourished — and neither do we. This month, I’m moving into July with a little more intention and presence — both in my own life and in the community around me. I hope you’ll find some of that ease in yours too.

TCM SEASONAL INSIGHT

Heat, Humidity & the Body’s Quiet Signals
In TCM, summer belongs to the Heart and the Fire element — the season of expansion, warmth, and connection. But the environment we move through each day shapes our energy in ways that are easy to miss until the body speaks up.
Hot, humid days can feel wonderful at first — warmth enlivens the body — but humidity is heavy, and over time it can leave you feeling sluggish, foggy, and strangely depleted even without much exertion. This is dampness accumulating. Staying well-hydrated, eating lightly, and resting in the heat of the afternoon are small but meaningful acts of care.

Sunny, windy days carry their own quality — that scattered, unmoored feeling that makes it hard to settle into anything. Wind, in TCM, can stir and disperse energy. On those days especially, a few minutes of deep, slow breathing or a short Qi Gong practice can help you feel grounded and rooted again. It’s a gentle reset — and the body tends to receive it gratefully.

Notice how the day’s weather is landing in your body and your mind. That noticing itself is the first step in tending your energy well.

SEASONAL OFFERING

Watermelon Salad for Hot Days
In TCM, watermelon is one of summer’s great gifts — cooling, hydrating, and clearing excess heat from the body. This simple salad is less a recipe and more a ritual: something cool and beautiful to prepare slowly when the day is warm. What you need
Watermelon, cubed · Cucumber, thinly sliced · Fresh mint · Feta cheese (optional) · A squeeze of lime · A drizzle of honey if you like a little sweet

How to put it together
Combine watermelon and cucumber in a bowl. Scatter torn mint leaves generously. Add feta if using. Squeeze lime over everything just before serving, and add honey if desired. Eat in the shade. That’s the whole practice.A note on watermelon: for those who tend toward cold digestion, enjoy it in smaller amounts and at room temperature rather than straight from the refrigerator.
